The International Savanna Fire Management Initiative (ISFMI) deployed Australia's traditional Indigenous approach to savanna burning, which leads to the reduction of wildfire greenhouse gas emissions by as much as half, and significant further mitigation of emissions through carbon sequestration over the long term.ISFMI is currently seeking an Environmental Officer to join their team, the main tasks of the role will include but not limited to• Lead the development and management of TFM projects, ensuring they are culturally appropriate, ecologically sound, and aligned with the ISFMI’s objectives.• Coordinate with Australian and other stakeholders to tailor TFM practices to local savanna ecosystems, considering social, economic, and environmental contexts.• Forge and maintain strategic partnerships with local Indigenous communities, non-profit organizations, governmental agencies, and other relevant stakeholders.• Facilitate knowledge exchange between Northern Australian TFM experts and the organisation’s partners to ensure the transfer of best practices and adaptation to local conditions.• Collaborate with projects to provide opportunities for reciprocal learning, allowing Australian scientists, Indigenous experts, and practitioners to gain insights into Latin American ecosystems, traditional practices, and approaches to biodiversity conservation and land management.• Conduct and facilitate research on the applicability and impact of TFM techniques around the world, including ecological, social, and economic dimensions.• Adapt TFM techniques to local contexts, ensuring the integration of Indigenous knowledge and practices with scientific research.• Develop and implement training programs for local communities and stakeholders in TFM practices, project management, and monitoring and evaluation.• Support the empowerment of Indigenous communities around the world to lead and manage TFM projects sustainably.• Represent the ISFMI at conferences, workshops, and meetings related to sustainable land management, climate change.• Develop communication materials and case studies to showcase the success and impact of TFM projects.Qualifications:• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainable Development, Climate Change, or a related field.• Three years of work experience in climate change and environmental international Law• Demonstrated experience in environmental projects, preferably with a focus on fire management, biodiversity conservation, or climate change.• Strong understanding of international environmental law, indigenous peoples' rights, and current climate change challenges• Excellent analytical, project management, and stakeholder engagement skills.• Ability to work in diverse cultural settings and remote locations.Salary Range: $100,000 to $130,000Work Location: MelbourneISFMI is an equal opportunity employer and strongly encourages applications from individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds to apply.
