Led by the Chief Decarbonisation Officer, the Energy & Climate team works collaboratively across the business to drive delivery of the Group climate strategy and address our key sources of carbon emissions. The Energy and Climate Legal team plays a key role in supporting and facilitating RTEC in meeting these ambitious objectives. Reporting to the Senior Corporate Counsel, Energy & Climate, and working in a collaborative community within our Rio Tinto Legal, Governance and Corporate Affairs team, you will: Work with RTEC teams and related functions to support decarbonisation projects and execution in Australia and other jurisdictions, including:supporting on Rio Tinto Nature Solutions projects, including carbon farming projects with social and biodiversity co-benefits;with internal commercial teams, procuring carbon credits and renewable energy certificates, in key jurisdictions;supporting on renewable energy and existing asset repowering projects; supporting on biofuels projects;providing legal advice regarding emissions reporting and compliance requirements, in key jurisdictions;Assist with risk assessments and internal approval processes for RTEC project activities to help drive progress across the RTEC portfolio of projects and support in solving complex problems and recommend solutions;Source and manage external lawyers and project-related consultants proactively to ensure good value and fit for purpose advice and support;Support on contract drafting/negotiation and management for RTEC projects; facilitation of execution and management / monitoring of internal approvals processes;Conduct legal/policy research and prepare concise and commercial internal advice;Maintain awareness of, and advise on, relevant external legal and regulatory developments; andDevelop and maintain close working relationships with the relevant RTEC legal team members, Projects, Energy & Closure team members, other members of the Rio Tinto Legal, Governance and Corporate Affairs team globally, as well as other related functions.About youTo be successfully considered for these roles, you will have: A law degree from a university in a common law jurisdiction;post-qualification experience: minimum of 2 years post-qualification experience as a legal practitioner in a relevant area of law or industry, in a top-tier law firm, government agency and/or large corporation;Excellent written and verbal English skills;Very good understanding of contracts law and drafting (commensurate to PQE);Appreciation of and experience working and negotiating with people from different cultures;The ability to work independently and to use your internal and external network to supplement your own skills and expertise where needed;Strong problem solving, strategic and analytical capability, as well as commercial acumen;Effective time management and personal organisational skills;Demonstrated ability to develop strong working relationships;Excellent communication and collaboration skills; andDemonstrated ability to influence and negotiate.Previous experience in advising on climate change law / policy, emissions reduction projects, and/or energy projects, procurement and markets, is desirable but not essential.
